REGISTRATION INFORMATION
To be eligible to register to vote, a person must be:
(1) 18 years of age.
EXCEPTION: A person who
is 17 but will be 18 by November 3, 1998 is eligible
to vote in the Primary of
his or her party and the General Election. He/she may
register no earlier than
60 days and no later than 25 days before the Primary.
(2) A legal resident of North Carolina 30 days
by the date of the next Election.
(3) A citizen of the United States. A person convicted
of a felony in North Carolina may
not register or vote until
citizenship has been restored.
A person residing in Mecklenburg County temporarily (working, attending
school, etc.) is not a resident for the purpose of voter registration.
The following evidence can be used to determine residence:
(1) A valid North Carolina driver's license with
a Mecklenburg County address.
(2) Other documents with Mecklenburg address.
(3) Automobile and/or other personal property listed
in Mecklenburg County for
tax purposes.
Voter registration must be kept current and complete by deadlines. Transfers
of address must be made by the registration deadline (25 days prior to
any election) to avoid delays in voting on election day. EXAMPLES: April
10, 1998 for the Primary Election and October 9, 1998 for the November
General Election.
A person may register as:
|
Democratic (D) |
|
Republican (R) |
|
Libertarian (L) |
|
Unaffiliated (U) |
Democratic, Republican and Libertarian affiliation will allow a voter
to vote in the party primary. All registrants may vote in non-partisan
elections, general elections and on all issues. Unaffiliated voters may
vote in either the Republican, Democratic or Libertarian primary (only
one) under North Carolina law.
Change of party is accomplished by completing a mail-in registration
form and by taking the oath in G.S.163-74(b). A person registered may change
their party affiliation at any time. In order for a change to be valid
for a particular election, it must be made at least 25 days prior to that
election.
